The incidence of diabetes has soared in an Upper Amazon community in Peru in recent years. New kinds of rice offer a promising approach to reducing the risk of diabetes. A study led by David Robbins and Bart Dean investigates whether switching to this type of rice affects the likelihood of developing diabetes. A randomized controlled trial, now in progress, will help researchers and community leaders better understand whether a change in rice can result in a change in health.
